Worlds Apart, Three Photographer’s Views

Joel Rubin
Roy Shigley
Nance S. Trueworthy
January 3rd thru January 30

During the month of January The Art Gallery at THE CLOWN will be exhibiting a collection of works by three local photographers: Joel Rubin, Roy Shigley and Nancy Trueworthy.

Joel Rubin

Joel Rubin’s focus over the past five years has been on poignant, black and white documentary projects as well as photojournalism work for newspapers and magazines. Joel studied at Columbia University in New York City and in 1998 and 1999, journeyed throughout Southeast Asia and then Cuba. In March, 2000, he returned to Southeast Asia and established himself as a freelance photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. He worked for the Associated Press on the Island of East Timor and traveled throughout Indonesia photographing breaking news for the New York Times. In 2001, Joel added to his black and white portfolio by traveling through Myanmar (Burma), focusing on the cultures of Southeast Asia. This publicly acclaimed work was featured in Newsweek magazine and exhibited in August, 2001 at the Halfking in New York City. His focus for this work was to search for extraordinary images in ordinary situations in which the subject is so absorbed in his task that he is unconcerned with the presence of a camera. Besides the Halfking, Joel’s exhibitions include the Maine Photo Co-Op, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Newseum/NY in New York City. When viewing this work, the viewer will see the presence of Joel’s background in history and feel his desire to portray common moments of the every day that his eye so keenly captured.

Roy Shigley

Roy Shigley is interested in showing a progression of attention, first with a fascination with his own emotions and interpersonal relationships and then with the world around him, entering into the world of color and design. His photographs include recent works shot in Mexico and Maine, along with some earlier images from the ‘60's and ‘70's. His extensive list of gallery exhibitions include galleries throughout California, Arizona and Oregon and his work is held in collections at Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and Bank of America in San Francisco, as well as other corporations in California, Alabama and Maine. Roy’s images have also been accepted for publication by the Smithsonian Institute, New York Times, Maine Business Profile Magazine, and the San Francisco Examiner, just to mention a few. This exhibition represents brief moments of exhilaration and insight into Roy Shigley’s world.

Nance S. Trueworthy

Nancy Trueworthy, specializes in assignment, location and stock photography. Her passion for photography has taken her all over the United States as well as the Caribbean and Europe, where her interest is to capture the moment. Whether it’s a father and son sailing a pond boat in the Luxemborg Gardens or the stillness of standing on the Acadamie Bridge at dusk, watching three gondolas sweep down the Grand Canal, Nance is looking for the essence of time and place in her work. She uses the Polaroid transfer process to further enhance the old and beautiful feel of these cities. Her work has been published internationally in books, calendars, greeting cards, magazines and featured in a Smithsonian Museum national exhibit entitled: "Ocean Planet." She has affiliations with Firehouse Gallery in Damariscotta, Maine as well as The Works Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Liaison International, Garden Image of Montreal and Stock Boston, among several local galleries. Most recently, Nance has been involved in a coffee table book on Portland entitled, "Portland-Spirit of the Eastern Seaboard." The viewers will find the journey of transporting themselves into Nance’s world a rewarding experience.
