The idea for providing an eclectic mix of cultural products at
good prices started on a farm in the hills of Tuscany. In the
mid-1990's, the owners bought and restored Tramonti, a farm and
farmhouse dating from the Middle Ages. They revived the small vineyard
and olive groves which were mixed in with the woods spread along the
hillside, and before long both their wine and their olive oil were
gaining renown far beyond the surrounding hills.
From the owners' love for artisan craftsmanship came the idea
to buy and import directly to the United States the best wine, food,
antique furniture and accessories which Europe has to offer. This love
of artistry also includes items ranging from traditional French and
Italian ceramics and olive wood kitchenware to the work of contemporary
visual artists who have spent considerable time living and practicing
their art throughout Europe. By scouring the European countryside for
the best combinations of craftsmanship and value, and then by importing
it directly, The Clown is able to offer the unique work of
small-production artisans at the best prices possible.
Why the name THE CLOWN? Trust us, not a very interesting
story, but you have to admit it is easy to remember and easy to
pronounce - making some of those marketing experts happy!
