Jan ter Weele was born in Groningen, The Netherlands, in 1935. He came to the U.S. in 1940 as a refugee, the oldest child in a family fleeing the German invasion and occupation of his native country. He has worked as a teacher, as the school superintendent in four different public school systems, as Director General of the International School of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland, and in Maine’s state government.
In 1995 he resigned his position as superintendent of schools in Blue Hill, Maine, in order to paint full-time. He has exhibited many times since 1995, at The New O'Farrell Gallery, Brunswick and here in Portland at Aucocisco, solo shows, invitational and juried shows. Weele studied at Maine College of Art, Massachusetts College of Art, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the Art Students League of New York with John Hultberg and Peter Golfinopoulos. He has a B.A. from Princeton and a M.A.T. and Ed.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
". . .painting is not so much about the motif as it is about emotions, colors, shapes, surface, texture, the compression of space, and the paint itself. Finally, I believe a painting comes from some underground reservoir, which is constantly replenished, but whose sources are unknown to us." Jan ter Weele
We are thrilled to bring the dynamic paintings of Jan ter Weele to THE CLOWN. He combines a Dutch aesthetic, stemming from his childhood roots in the Netherlands, with a modernist sensibility. The space in the gallery lends itself to the large and small of Weele’s colorful paintings.
