Warm saturated colors, deliberate brush strokes and energetic
design make up Martha Burkert's vibrant works on canvas. The
warm light of summer on a building, contrasted with cool shadows in
blue and violet hues, enliven most of her pieces. As an emerging
artist, Martha has demonstrated her strong sense of design and passion
for color and shape in each piece presented. Although she's relatively
a newcomer to painting, she's been a freelance location scout and photo
stylist for catalogs for some time. Many of the same design
necessities, including composition and color, overlap in her different
pursuits. She has been influenced by Van Gogh, Manet, Bonnard,
Diebenkorn, Fairfield Porter, and Alfred Chadbourn, with whose work
there is a similarity. We first saw Martha's work here at Gallery at
THE CLOWN in December 2002, when she was part of our holiday show, when
her work was well received. We're delighted to represent Martha and
encourage anyone who wants a taste of Maine, to stop by and enjoy the
work of Martha Burkert.

Martha Burkert brings a fresh vibrant palette to her unique perceptions of landscapes with structures of familiar Maine scenes. Her sense of color comes from the Alfred Chadbourn school of thought, with rich layers of color abstracting reality to a heightened appearance. Burkert lived in Portland for 10 years before returning to her native state of Texas, where she lives with her husband and children. Her family continues to come to Maine in the summer months, giving her the oppurtunity to paint the places she knows so well.
